2017 Clear Lake AREA Community Garden Rules

Clear Lake AREA Community Garden

Clear Lake Area Community Garden began taking shape this past winter.  Deuel Area Development, City of Clear Lake and the 4-H Extension Office aligned themselves together to begin a community garden.  Located on property near the Clear Lake water tower, the city and DADi have been working out a plan that should work best for everyone involved.

An area resident asked DADi last year if there could ever be a possibility of a community garden for local gardeners.    A committee was formed with Dean Trautman, Daryl Feilmeier, Deb Lessman and Joan Sacrison.  They began researching other community gardens to see how they are run with rules and applications. Those details have been worked out over the winter months.

Interested parties may like to garden and have a space of their own simply because it does not work on their residential housing, or they live in an apartment.  Lot sizes will be available for rent.  A 10’ x 20’ plot will be available for $25 rent and a 20’ x 20’ for $40 from late – April through Mid-October.  There is a an application that needs to be submitted and can be found online in the Resource Library of www.deuelarea.com, or by contacting the DADi office by email dadi@itctel.com or calling 605.874.8038.

Garden Rules have been established for weed control, garden agreement, parking, equipment, gardening hours, water, neighborliness, Pets, children and more.  The rules too can be found on the website above or by reaching DADi.

The CL Area Community Garden is open to anyone in Deuel County that is interested in gardening.  Audrey Poppen from ICAP, located in the county courthouse, has a limited number of scholarships for qualified parties to help cover the cost of the plot fee and seeds. She is the contact person for ICAP’s part in this project.

Weather permitting, gardening will begin in late-April.  A fee and signed waiver are required to reserve a plot. This first year will take working out the kinks.  There are only a few plots open this first year and they are on a first come, first serve basic.  For more information, please contact the DADi office.
