Miller Housing Committee

The Miller Housing Committee has been created to study the housing situation in the Miller area. The mission of the committee is to find out the specific housing needs in the Miller area and to develop a plan to address those needs.

People may ask why On Hand Development is working on housing and how does that relate to economic development. Economic development involves helping our local businesses expand and new businesses get started. That means that these businesses will hire new employees and new employees need an affordable place to live. Insufficient housing will have a negative impact on economic growth.

Committee members include Tammy Caffee, Kristi Lichty, Bob Steers, Tony Rangel and Ron Blachford

The Housing Study done in 2013 steers the committee in securing affordable workforce housing.

DISCRETIONARY FORMULA

The following discretionary formula is adopted for any new construction of residential structures, including any addition to or renovation of an existing structure in the City of Clear Lake with an assessed value of $30,000.00 or more pursuant to the following percentages of assessed value over a period of five years:

First Year.....................20%
Second Year...............40%
Third Year....................60%
Fourth Year.................80%
Fifth Year...................100%

Following the recession of the early 1980s, the Future Fund was developed in 1987 with $1.8 million to invest in South Dakota’s workforce and build its economy. It helps to support the training of employees, retraining of employees during layoffs, business recruitment, and research and entrepreneurial activities. In 2011, $6,978,077 was awarded to 27 companies for these purposes, creating 1,335 jobs.
